Demolition of Irish sugar Factory, Carlow

Tinnelly Group where tasked with the demolition of the Irish Sugar Factory based in Carlow, this project required planning from both our asbestos and demolition teams.

The project involved removal of an asbestos cement roof, demolition of steel frame structure known as the pulp store, removal of the metal cladding and demolition of the main factory building.

For the asbestos stage of the project, the team undertook the removal of the corrugated asbestos cement sheeting from the pitched roof structures on all buildings. This was completed by removing the sheet from the under side of the roof. Highly trained asbestos operatives in full PPE where hoisted where they worked on removing the asbestos cement sheeting following all the necessary health & safety protocols. Once ready, the sheet was then removed by a second asbestos operative where the sheet was placed onto a telescopic handler.

Once safely removed, wrapped and sealed, the sheets were moved to a designated area of the site in preparation for transfer to a licensed disposal site.

For the next stage, the removal of the metal cladding on the main factory building and the demolition of the the pulp store.

The team carried out the removal of the steel profile cladding on the side walls of the main factory building. This was done manually by the onsite team, using hoisting equipment. Each individual sheet was removed and lowered to the ground.

Tinnelly Group then carried out the complete dismantling and demolition of the portal frame structure. These works were carried out once the removal of all asbestos cement sheeting roofing had been safely removed and the building was stripped from all unfixed furnishings.

A 50 tonne mobile crane was mobilised to site and set up beside the pulp store. The steel roof purlins used to fix the roof sheeting was removed first, followed by the main portal beams. Operatives used mobile elevated working platforms to gain access to the roof level. The section removed where stacked in a designated area beside the structure ready for removal off site.

The concrete wall infills and concrete column casings where then removed. An excavator track machine with a hydraulic rock hammer then broke up the concrete floor and foundations. All concrete was then crushed onsite.

There was further dismantling required of structural steel work behind the raw factory, this was completed using a 50 tonne mobile crane with operatives using burning equipment and the low level steel work was demolished using excavators with steel cutting shears.

This was another project Tinnelly Group where proud to delivery.
