Cape Sierra Hotel, Sierra Leone, South Africa
In 2011, Tinnelly Group undertook the complete demolition of all existing structures at the Former Cape Sierra Hotel based in Sierra Leone, South Africa.
Tinnelly Group, on behalf of Lagan Construction sent two demolition excavators and a 8 wheel tipper lorry with our operatives to complete the demolition of a project in South Africa.
This was a former hotel in the Aberdeen Peninsula in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The machinery was shipped direct to Freetown form Tilbury Docks in London, complete with all the various demolition attachments required to complete the project.
We shipped our 360 rotating concrete pulveriser, hydraulic rock hammer, 360 rotating sorting grab, digging buckets and grading buckets.
Prior to mobilising the machinery the strip out works to the buildings were completed onsite.
The site consisted of a disused hotel complex, derelict buildings, swimming pool and parking with some landscaped areas. The existing structures that we demolished were:
· The Central Hotel Buildings
· Service Building
· Three Residential accommodation blocks
· Steel sectioned high level water tank
· Swimming pool structure
The demolition of the buildings was carried out by two Liebherr 934 demolition excavators. The Liebherr 934 was specially designed for industrial goods handling and demolition of buildings in this height range. Their high lifting capacities allowed quick handling speed and the special types of attachments have been designed for different applications.
Each machine was be fitted with a different type of attachment for the work it carried out during the demolition. The Liebherr 934 was fitted with a 360˚ rotating concrete pulveriser to carry out the demolition of the reinforced concrete frames.
Floor slabs both suspended and ground bearing were demolished using a hydraulic rock hammer.
When the buildings on the site were demolished the processing of the concrete demolition arisings commenced. All concrete sections of the building including the masonry from the stockpiled materials were then broken up using a hydraulic rock hammer and transported to the stockpile area on site.
Looking back at this project in Sierra Leone brings back great memories, not just of the work we accomplished, but of the people.
It’s bittersweet to reflect on this project as it reminds us of our late brother and company director, Dessie, who spent time onsite here.
Dessie’s dedication and passion left a lasting impact on every project he touched and every person he worked with.
He may no longer be with us, but his memory and legacy continue to inspire us every day.
