Last year Tinnelly Group undertook a project removing asbestos from a ship docked in Dublin Port.
This ship was the MV Shingle, which was previously seized by Revenue after it was incepted during a smuggling operation.
The 60m MV Shingle, which was towed from New Ross as it can no longer sail independently, will become the country’s first marine artificial reef when it is scuttled tomorrow, weather permitting.
Today, the ship is due to be sunk off the Mayo coastline to form an artificial reef, a human created structure designed to enhance ecosystems. It is expected to also attract tourism and divers to the area.
The sinking will mark the beginning of the end of the ten-year Shingle saga.
The ship was intercepted in the summer of 2014, heading from Slovenia towards Drogheda in Co Louth, with 32 million illegal cigarettes on board.
After legal proceedings, Revenue took control of the vessel.
The asbestos removal, took around four months in total and was completed in time to free the docking berth ahead of cruise line season.
